FLOODS AND THE DOE'S CHILD

In mid-May 2014, heavy rainfall caused devastating floods in parts of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. I remember the horrific television footage and the aid that arrived from across Europe to the affected region of the Balkans.

SLOVENIAN SOUTHERNEST FOOTPATH

After many years, I organised a tour of the source of the Kolpa River again this year, which reminded me of an event long ago when we set off on the Southernmost Slovenian Footpath, which follows the Kolpa River from Radenci to Damlje.

We took the bus to Radenci, where the participants were given brief instructions, and then we set off. At first, we walked together for quite a while, slowly.

THE BEST KOFTES IN TABRIZ

Last year, at the end of May, we travelled through the north-western part of Iran, visiting places that are not among the most visited by tourists or are not visited at all. We began our trip in the province of Khuzestan, then continued through the provinces of Lorestan, Hamadan, Kermanshah, and Kurdistan along the border with Iraq. We then spent several days in the provinces of West and East Azerbaijan before heading towards the Caspian Sea.

ALBANIAN IMPROVISATION

When I first organised a trip to Albania about ten years ago, I booked all the hotels we stayed in directly, except for one, which I reserved through a local travel agency and received a voucher as proof of payment. I was a little worried about whether everything would go smoothly.

BAPTISM UNDER BOHOR

Since I have been organising and conducting trips for over twenty years, I have naturally accumulated quite a few varied memories. Fortunately, our brains mostly retain the good memories, while the less pleasant or even bad ones usually fade into our subconscious over time. When I recall certain events and incidents like this, it occurred to me…

RANDOMLY TO EGYPT

Coincidences happen to me frequently, so often that I am beginning to doubt whether they are truly coincidences. An in-depth philosophical debate about this is certainly out of place, but as luck would have it, at the beginning of last year I unexpectedly found myself in the Sahara with the Bedouin Mostafa, who had spent many years in Slovenia. Since Slovenia is small, perhaps it was not a coincidence that we met and I received an invitation to a tour to prepare for a possible trip.

NORTH CYPRUS

I often find myself falling a little in love with the countries I visit. This happened to me in Northern Cyprus as well. Perhaps it was because I was there for the first time at just the right moment…

GEORGIA – HOW TO VISIT IT

When I first visited Georgia with my family years ago, we mainly went to places recommended by various websites and guidebooks. We rented a car and set off according to our planned itinerary, but it broke down on the very first day of driving.

THE WEALTH OF IRAN

The view of the endless plain of the semi-desert landscape, accompanied by the melody of traditional music, makes me think again of the country I visited. The desire to return was overwhelming; the impressions from my first trip were exceptional...

ARMENIAN BOOMERANG

Armenia is also one of those countries that "comes after you"; it keeps reappearing in all possible forms. I felt this from the first time I visited. I sensed it in the people...

GEORGIA: A LEGENDARY ROUTE

The village of Roshka is situated at an altitude of 1,980 metres in the Khevsureti region of northeastern Georgia. It is less than 10 km from the main road leading towards the peaks of the Caucasus and the northern border of Georgia. Only a few houses sit at the bottom of a glacial valley...

GEORGIA: HOW I SEARCHED FOR Homo erectus

I don't know why, but from the college lectures on human evolution, I remembered the Dmanisi site in southern Georgia, where our ancestor Homo erectus was found. When I visited Georgia again, I decided that I had to see this site..
